Children with dyslexia have a difficulty reading and recognizing words. However, it is possible for dyslexia to affect a child ability to understand math. This is referred to as dyscalculia. Children with dyslexia often have short and long term memory issues. Math involves remembering concepts and applying them later. There are things teachers and parents can do to help combat dyscalculia. They can check in with the child if they are stuck at the beginning of a problem, this encouragement is important. If the child does not feel confident they may avoid the feeling of failure completely. It is important to help the child know that learning is a process and it can be fun.
