The University of Houston-Victoria held a math camp this summer that taught five teens how math can be used to solve real life problems. They learned not just on a theoretical level but we actually guided through actual case studies and problems that could best be solved using math, such as how to predict a person’s height based upon their hand size and how to feed a group of 40 people in the most cost-effective way.

The camp was made possible through a grant from the Alcoa Foundation. All five teens that attended expressed not only gratefulness for the camp but an increased appreciation for math in general and their future studies in the field. While this camp was considered a success, the university has hopes that it will become an annual event that continues to grow in numbers and influence.
“We hope this camp grows and attracts more brilliant minds in the region. It is a nice thing for the university, the students, and ultimately, for the Crossroads region, since the more knowledgeable the community is, the more prosperous it will be.”
