Emma Lieberman suffers from panic attacks and attends Champlain Valley Union High School and is campaigning to add a sensory room to her school’s student care system. A sensory room is a dedicated space that has various calming light and sound effects and can soothe students who are in distress.

Other schools in Vermont already have these rooms to accommodate students in need of them. Emma Lieberman believes that these rooms would help students recover better than the nurse’s office or a normal room which might have bright lights, or loud sounds. Great amounts of anxiety can be an impairment to students.
“Some anxiety is okay, but for those who are experiencing this impairing anxiety where they need the accommodations where they need to have specific timeouts and such to help them cope, you know, a good quarter to 20 percent of kids are experiencing some sort of pathological, and that roughly correlates to what we see in terms of prevalence rates,” said Logan Hegg, a UVM Psychologist.
