According to a recent article in Education World, women are not as likely to enter the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) field as men do. Research suggests the reason for this is that women tend to leave the program when they take college calculus. This is an extremely challenging course.

Encouraging Women’s Confidence in Math Skills Could Inc… #dyscalculia
Challenging calculus courses are causing women to run from the STEM program.
According to a recent study published, it noted that women are 1.5 times more likely to drop out of an STEM major after calculus due to a lack of confidence. This lack of confidence was found and the start and end of the term. Research indicates that if women could increase their confidence in math, then they would make up a higher percentage of the STEM workforce.
“When comparing women and men with above-average mathematical abilities and preparedness, we find women start and end the term with significantly lower mathematical confidence than men. This suggests a lack of mathematical confidence, rather than a lack of mathematically ability, may be responsible for the high departure rate of women,”
"Key Takeaways:
Women need more representation in scientific fields.
Confidence is the key to success in fields that are technical.
Increasing the number of women in these fields is critical to advancing society.
