California– Assembly Bill 1369 has just passed the assembly education committee. The bill will require schools to test students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade for dyslexia and other learning disabilities. While the aim of Bill 1369 is to identify and give appropriate services to students who learn differently, critics of the bill worry that it will lead to over-testing, over-diagnoses of learning disabilities, and unnecessary monetary spending. In the next few weeks the appropriations committee will determine the cost of the bill and make a decision about whether or not the new testing will be implemented.
