Common questions from parents

Should I stop my child from using AI for homework?

Not necessarily. In the one direct classroom trial, the harm came from unguarded answer-giving, and a tutor mode with guardrails removed it. Watch how the tool behaves when your child is stuck. A helper that asks questions and offers hints is working for your child. One that hands over finished answers is working instead of them.

What is the difference between an AI tutor and an AI answer engine?

An AI tutor responds at the step where your child went wrong, offers a hint, and waits for another try. An answer engine produces the finished product on request. VanLehn’s 2011 research review found step-level coaching comes close to the benefit of a human tutor. Answer-checking delivers much less.

My child’s homework looks better with AI. Why worry?

Performance during practice and learning that lasts are two different things. In a 2025 PNAS study, students with unguarded ChatGPT scored 48 percent higher in practice. They then scored 17 percent worse on an exam taken alone. If the polish disappears when the tool does, the skill was never built.

Is AI personalization the same as learning styles?

No. Useful personalization adjusts the level of the work and the feedback to where your child is right now. Learning-styles matching, the idea that children learn better when taught in a preferred mode, was tested in 2008 and did not hold up. If a tool’s marketing leans on styles, that is a signal to look closer.
