What does the IDA 2025 three-factor model mean for my child?

It means your child’s learning challenge is not the result of a single, fixed cause. The IDA 2025 model identifies three interacting factors: genetic traits that shape processing, the current organization of the brain’s learning circuits, and the quality and timing of environmental support. None of these three is a verdict. The environmental factor, which includes the instruction your child receives and your involvement in sustaining it, has been shown through neuroplasticity research to produce measurable changes in the neurobiological factor.

Is improvement actually possible for my child’s learning challenge?

The neuroplasticity research says yes, and the IDA 2025 definition reflects it. Shaywitz and colleagues at Yale and Temple and colleagues at Stanford used brain imaging to show that children with reading difficulties who received targeted instruction developed the same posterior reading pathways as typical readers. The brain built new circuits where they had been underdeveloped. This is not exceptional. It is what appropriate, sustained, targeted support is designed to produce.

Why does early intervention matter so much?

The brain’s neuroplasticity is most active during the years when foundational reading and math skills are being built.
