You give your child three steps. Shoes on, backpack by the door, teeth brushed. Two minutes later they are standing in the hallway holding one shoe, with no memory of what came after it. You have watched this happen so many times that a quiet part of you wonders whether they were listening at all. They were. What ran out was room, not effort, and almost no one explains that to a parent.

Is a weak working memory the same as low intelligence?+
No. Working memory is a specific skill for holding information briefly while using it, and it is separate from how bright a child is. Plenty of capable children have a working memory that fills up quickly, and it says nothing about their potential.
Does working memory improve with age?+
Working memory develops through childhood, but the lever you control is not age. It responds to good strategies and to practising the actual skills your child is learning. What does not work is treating it like a muscle to bulk up with memory games, which improve the game and little else.
My child forgets multi-step instructions. What helps right now?+
Give one step at a time, write the steps down where your child will see them, and ask them to repeat the list back to you. Each of these hands part of the remembering to the page or the routine instead of the workspace.
Is this a sign of ADHD or a learning difference?+
Working memory overload shows up in many profiles, including attention and reading differences, and on its own it is a description of what is happening, not a label. Working memory is the mental workspace where your child holds information for a few seconds while they do something with it. It keeps the first half of a sentence in mind while they read the second, holds a number steady while they carry it, and remembers step two while they finish step one. Why a full workspace looks like “not trying”

When working memory runs out of room, the results look exactly like the things that get a child in trouble. They drop the last instruction, lose their place mid-page, forget the question halfway through answering it, or freeze when a problem has too many moving parts at once. From the outside this reads as careless, distracted, or lazy. From the inside it is a workspace that filled up before the task was finished. Your child is not refusing the work. They ran out of desk.

It also helps to know that working memory never operates alone. Reading, writing, and math each lean on several systems at the same time: language, attention, processing speed, and memory, all sharing the load. Working memory is one important part of that team, not a single master switch, which is why the infographics that map the foundational skills that actually predict learning list it alongside several others rather than on its own. And when a child keeps forgetting half of what you told them, the fix is rarely to tell them to try harder, because effort was never the thing in short supply.

It is the clearest example in the research of a skill that improves on the practice task and stops there. So the goal is not a bigger workspace. The goal is a lighter load and a skill that runs on its own.

Three moves do the real work:

  • Shrink the load. Give one instruction at a time, write multi-step directions down, and let your child check them off. A note on the counter is a piece of memory they no longer have to hold in their head.
  • Build the skill until it runs itself. When a reading or math skill becomes automatic through practice, it stops taking up workspace, and the room it frees goes to the harder thinking on top. Practising the actual skill beats practising a proxy for it, every time this has been tested.
  • Practise by pulling it back out. Asking your child to recall something from memory, rather than reread it, strengthens that specific material far more than looking at it again. A quick “tell me the three steps back to me” does more than one more read-through.

None of this is about making a child hold more. It is about handing the workspace less to carry and teaching the skills that clear it. That is the difference between a child who looks like they are not trying and a child who has room to think. It is also why doing the work beats sitting through it: the brain keeps what it actively uses.
