ADHD’s Impact on Self-Awareness Can Lead to a Sense of Vulnerability and Adaptability
ADHD affects executive function, with self-awareness being a critical component. This can result in a feeling of vulnerability as individuals with ADHD may feel they lack an “exterior shell,” making them more susceptible to the opinions and needs of others. However, this same adaptability can be a strength, allowing those with ADHD to “pretzel” themselves into different roles and situations. While this adaptability is enjoyable, it can also lead to a lack of a solid self-construct, making it challenging to maintain a consistent identity.
