So how do you tell the difference from your own kitchen table? Look at what the tool asks your child to do. The methods that genuinely build learning are not new, and they are not glamorous. Research on memory points to a few that hold up. Retrieval practice means a child pulls an answer from memory instead of rereading it (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006). Spacing means practice spread over days rather than crammed in one sitting (Cepeda and colleagues, 2006). Step-by-step tutoring adapts to the exact spot a child is stuck (VanLehn, 2011).

Now look at what a lot of ed-tech actually does. It hands out points, badges and streaks. It measures engagement, then dresses that up as learning. A child taps through level after level and feels busy while the underlying skill never moves. A points system makes a child feel like they are learning. Real mastery makes them feel capable. Those are not the same thing, and children know the difference long before the dashboard does.

The direction of the evidence is clear enough to act on, even where the size of the effect is still debated. So the parent test is one question: does this tool make my child think and remember, or does it make them collect? Built around how a child learns, technology earns its place.
