Illinois is attempting to help its teachers face the transition to the new Common Core standards in math, by issuing sample lesson plans. Unfortunately, many teachers and school districts complain, they’ve been arriving late for application. However, when in use, teachers have reported more engaged students and students developing a deeper understanding of the mathematics. This is great news for students with dyslexia, who already struggle to stay engaged or even begin to understand how or why an algorithm works. Hopefully next year the project will be completed, and all teachers will be able to implement the plans.
