How to prepare children for success at a young age
The idea is to have the children use words like “a lot” or “more” and even words like “fewer” or “some”. By exposing them to words like this, it can make a difference in their ability to learn basic math skills. It seems that the children are able to better link these words to what the concepts mean more readily than children who are not taught this language concept.
Mathematical language is one of the strongest predictors of children’s early mathematical success, so Purpura wanted to determine how effective early exposure to mathematical language could be for children ages 3-5.
"Key Takeaways:
To help improve mathematical skills, studies show we should introduce mathematical terms like “more” or “a lot” to them during the preschool years.
This approach is not new but the studies have shown that when you are intentionally teaching a child these words and concepts it does make a difference.
Mathematical language is one of the strongest predictors of a child’s early math success.
