However, the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology have a new initiative that could help turn that all around. This new initiative would help expand curricular and extracurricular math activities.

The initiative helps by adding new programs and even supplemental materials to engage the students in mathematics. It will help establish more math clubs for the middle school students and increase the number of middle school math competitions that are hosted at SD Mine from only one a year to hosting four a year. Middle school is when many students begin to lose interest in math, said RCAS Superintendent Lori Simon and SDSM&T President, Dr. Heather Wilson. 17 percent of South Dakota students in grades 7 through 12 choose science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning plans.
