The headline is no longer whether students use AI, but how fast that use is climbing. A RAND Corporation study tracked middle, high, and college students across 2025 and found AI use for homework rose from 48 percent to 62 percent in seven months, with high schoolers jumping from 49 percent to 63 percent. Writing help and homework questions lead the way: by May 2025, roughly 69 percent of high school students reported using ChatGPT for assignments. The two uses parents see most at home are exactly the two the data flags first.

A child who pastes the prompt and submits the output has handed the brain-changing work to a machine. Problem-solving grows from productive struggle, and struggle outsourced is struggle skipped.
